What Does an ISSA-Certified Coach Actually Do?

ISSA certification explained — what the credential covers, why it matters when choosing a coach, and how to verify one.

Sebastian Martinez··4 min read

When a coach says they are "certified," it is worth knowing what that actually means. ISSA — the International Sports Sciences Association — is one of the most widely recognized certifying bodies for personal trainers and strength coaches in the United States.

What the certification covers

An ISSA certification is not a weekend quiz. It covers the foundations a coach needs to program safely and effectively:

  • Exercise science and functional anatomy
  • Program design and progression
  • Injury prevention and movement screening
  • Nutrition principles and body composition

Why it matters when you choose a coach

A certified coach understands why a program is built the way it is — not just what to copy from a forum. That difference shows up when you stall, tweak something, or need to train around a niggle. The credential is a floor, not a ceiling, but a coach without one is a gamble.

Sebastian holds three

ChimpFit is run by Sebastian Martinez, who holds three ISSA credentials: Certified Personal Trainer, Certified Powerlifting Instructor, and Nutrition Coach. All three certificate numbers are published and verifiable on the about page.
